Saratoga Trunk, Edna Ferber's novel, was filmed during WW2 and released in 1946 and features two of the most interesting female roles - Clio Dulaine (Ingrid Bergman) and Angelique (played, rather implausibly, by Flora Robson in blackface). I'm not sure it is an obvious candidate for a Hollywood remake, but an excellent film nevertheless.
