Race and Ethnicity in the Western in Film and TV
Please join us at the Film and History Conference on the West in Kansas City from November 7-9, 2002 and think about giving a presentation on the issue of Race and Ethnicity in the American West. We hope to create several exciting panels. Consider the following panels as possibilities for this area but keep in mind that we are open to all topics that might fall under the topic Race and Ethnicity in the Western:

1.. African American images in the postmodern West. How do contemporary Black filmmakers reconstitute the West? How do contemporary African American images reshape our understanding of the American West?
2.. The Black military experience in the development and settling of the American Frontier: e.g., York and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Black soldiers with and against Native Americans, The Mexican War, and famous frontier wars.
3.. Black cowboys and the building of the American West: e.g., the famous cattle drives, Black outlaws and heroes in the celebrated cattle towns like Dodge City, Tombstone, and Abilene.
4.. History vs. Hollywood: e.g., Famous incidents and events portrayed in Hollywood movies.
5.. John Ford and Woody Strode: The strengths and weaknesses of the Black image during the director's revisionist image of the American West
6.. Important films in shaping the Black Western image: e.g., SGT. RUTLEDGE, BUCK AND THE PREACHER, POSSEE, and UNFORGIVEN.
Presentations are limited to 20 minutes. 250 word proposals, consisting of an abstract outlining the purpose, methodology and conclusions of the proposed paper, and a brief bio should be submitted by August 15, 2002 to Hilary Neroni at the Dept. of English, University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont 05405 or by email to [log in to unmask]
