I don't know if this will be of any help, but one film that comes to mind is Oscar Micheaux's silent film, BODY AND SOUL (1925). Paul Robeson stars as an alcoholic preacher. He also has a role as an inventor; both pursue the young female lead. It is Robeson's first film role. Information from the IMDB says that Micheaux also wrote the novel. More recently, there is David Cronenberg's DEAD RINGERS (1988), starring Jeremy Irons as identical twins.
