Faculty Position in Video Production

Telecommunication and Film Department
College of Communication and Information Sciences
University of Alabama

The Telecommunication and Film Department seeks a full time, tenure-track
faculty member for the following position, beginning August 15, 2002:

Assistant professor with appropriate experience to teach video production,
including field and studio production and video editing (analog and
digital). Potential secondary teaching areas include multimedia and
interactive media production, and broadcast news production. Appointment
requires an M.F.A. or Ph.D. and demonstrated potential for conducting a
program of creative production or research activity suitable for later
consideration for tenure. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of
enthusiasm for teaching production, developing an innovative curriculum and
promoting strong relationships with the professional media
community. Salary is nationally competitive.

Established in 1940, the Department has approximately 350 students in its
undergraduate and masters programs. It is one of five academic departments
in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, which includes an
interdepartmental doctoral program and the Institute for Communication
Research. The Department’s video production teaching facilities include DV
camcorders and Media 100 and DVC-Pro edit suites. The College houses the
professional television production facilities of the state’s Center for
Public Television and Radio, WUAL-FM, an award-winning NPR affiliate, and a
student radio station, WVUA-FM. The College recently acquired Tuscaloosa’s
primary commercial television station, which will move into the
Department’s facilities during the fall semester.

The University of Alabama, established in 1831 in Tuscaloosa, was named one
of the top-50 public universities in the nation in the US News & World
Report rankings for 2002. It has nearly 20,000 students, including 3,000
graduate students in 56 doctoral programs and a Carnegie classification of
“Doctoral/Research Universities—Extensive.” Tuscaloosa is a
university-oriented community of nearly 100,000 located about fifty minutes
southwest of Birmingham, in the nation’s 39th television market. It is a
morning’s drive from the Smokey mountains, Gulf Coast beaches, New Orleans,
Nashville and Atlanta. Additional information about the Department, the
