Spike Lee has written background books to most of his films.

Lillian Ross's MOVIE, about the very troubled production of John
Huston's THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, is a classic in the field.

I don't recall if anyone has mentioned Robert Carringer's books on
CITIZEN KANE and THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (as well as his voiceover
commentaries on the Criterion disks), but they are excellent.
