Title: Celluloid Artistry: Exploring the Film/Art axis of influence
The focus of this project will be the inclusion of film (historically,
conceptually and theoretically) within the art world. From its inception
Film has had a turbulent relationship with the visual arts, having shared
certain aesthetics (expressionism, cubism, surrealism) personnel (Oskar
Kokoshka, Salvadore Dali, Andy Warhol) and pretensions (the high art as
opposed to low art paradigm). This project will explore each of these
moments of contact, and the ways in which cinema practice was touched by
each encounter, in order to assess the impact of more contemporary
film/visual art couplings.

The project would be carried out in the Faculty of Media, Arts and Society
drawing expertise from those teaching on the BA(hons) Film Studies and
BA(hons) Media and Cultural Studies and Fine Arts degrees.

The student is likely to have a BA (hons) degree in a related area, for
example Art, Film, Media, Design though some background in Film Studies in
particular would be useful. An MA is also required and an interest in the
subject as specified.
