Gerald Mast's book _The Movies in Our Midst_ has some interesting material
on the production code at the beginning of chapter 5: "The Thirties" --
including excerpts from Raymond Moley's authorized history _The Hays
Office_. Tino Ballio has an excerpt from Ruth A. Inglis's book: _Freedom of
the Movies_ (1945) which might also prove useful.
