CALL FOR PAPERS
CAPTIVITY NARRATIVES (OLD & NEW)
The Southwest/Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Associations
will hold their 26th Annual meeting at the Sheraton Old Town in Albuquerque,
New Mexico, from March 7-10, 2001. The 1999 and 2000 meetings met there, and
the organizations' members wanted to return because of the great location,
the fine hotel, food, sights, and museums.

Papers on all aspects of captivity narratives are encouraged for our 2001
meeting. Participants may consider literal and figurative-emotional and
psychological-forms of "captivity" as they appear in various narrative forms.
Past topics have examined narratives concerning Puritan and Native
American relations in Early America; slavery in different historical and
cultural contexts; religious intolerance and persecution; prisoners of war
and political exile; kidnapping and abduction; and spousal and child abuse.
Narratives include
canonical as well as non-canonical pieces of literature, legends, and other
popular writings; oral histories; political and historical writings; films,
television
and radio programs, and other mass media. Participants may consider how
various captivity narratives cross paths with issues of race and ethnicity;
religion; gender; political dispositions; and ideologies.

Papers that address any aspect of narratives of captivity are welcome.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS 10 January, 2001.
