Vacancy: Senior Film Editor, Central Europe Review (CER)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The weekly Internet journal of politics, society and culture in Central and Eastern Europe

The journal:

Central Europe Review (http://www.ce-review.org) is a weekly Internet journal of politics, society and culture in Central and Eastern Europe. The site receives on average over 10,000 readers every week and last July received the NetMedia 2000 award for Outstanding Contribution to Online Journalism in Europe.

CER primarily covers the countries directly affected by European enlargement and the widening of Western political structures, and the Kinoeye section is a well-established and popular part of the journal with a wide reputation.

The position:

The Senior Film Editor will be required to commission and oversee the editing, HTML mark up, photo-editing and proof-reading of articles, reviews and interviews for the journal and to guarantee a constant stream of innovative, thought-provoking and accessible film writing which can be appreciated by both film specialists and well-educated general readers with an interest in the region.

Additional duties include: negotiating with authors to secure contracts for ebook publishing; liasing with other film journals on content exchanges and republishing deals; building industry contacts; training new staff and overseeing the updating of CER's video shop and "Kinoeye Archive".

The ideal candidate:

CER does not have any funding source and cannot, alas, provide any form of remuneration or cover expenses. In fact, all writers, editors and editorial assistants at CER donate their time and service to the journal. However, Central Europe Review is a high-profile award-winning journal which commands academic and journalistic respect, and a period in the post would significantly bolster a CV.

The ideal candidate should:
a.. have a good understanding of Central and Eastern Europe as a region and the overall issues, both within the film world and outside it
b.. be self-motivating, innovative and be prepared to bring new ideas to the project
c.. have good computer and Internet access and be able to download CER specialised software
d.. have an interest in learning HTML and basic photo-editing
e.. be able to work for CER at least until Dec 2001
f.. be able to work at least eight hours a week on the project, although the journal does not publish over holiday periods and other weeks off can be arranged in advance
To apply:

Send
  a.. a full CV
  b.. writing samples (if applicable)
c.. a covering letter explaining what shape you feel CER's Kinoeye section should take in the coming months and how you would achieve that

The closing date for applications is Monday 30 October 2000. Applicants with a suitable background will be asked to attend a "virtual interview" using Microsoft's free "MSN Messenger" software.
